The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde For their upcoming show, Richland Players will present The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Many long-time Tri-City residents have seen the play long ago. To make the play fresh and fun again, the director, Joyce Bean, is working with many beautiful, talented young actors and technical staff, weaving in music, dance and lots of physical action. There is a mix of familiar faces and newcomers to the Players' stage. The actors involve the audience in asides; they also present the important facts of the matter so that everyone has a chance to get it. Joyce says, "A very intelligent friend told me that he didn¹t get it when he saw the Ashland production a few seasons ago. I want us to make every effort to have the audience be able to connect the dots as the play reaches a satisfying conclusion." The story is a comic romp through Victorian England. It pokes fun at the British upper class, who have too much time on their hands to be taken seriously. The set features three partitions built on a stage revolve, or turn-table, so the movement scene to scene will be swift and fun for the audience. Costumes and settings will be in the late 1800's period. The story is about young love and mistaken identity. The two young ladies each want to marry a man named Ernest (note the double entendre Earnest and Ernest). They are upset to learn that neither of their young men are named Ernest, as far as anyone knows. It is a frolic through 19th century Victorian manners and the aristocracy's idle pleasures.
